Dr Desmond Murphy  Consultant Respiratory Physician (1981 - 2010)

Dr Desmond Murphy was an instrumental figure in the start of the hospice movement on the Isle of Wight.

As a Consultant Respiratory Physician working at St Mary's Hospital in Newport, Dr Murphy was among those to recognise the need for expert end of life care. At the official opening ceremony of the then Earl Mountbatten House on 13 October 1982, Dr Murphy gave a speech alongside HRH Duchess of Kent and Mr Douglas Naylor, Chairman of the Isle of Wight Health Authority.
